But maybe your interest is more focused, and you’re called to support one of the Church’s specific ministries. For example, giving to your parish is one way to make a direct impact on the Church. Some organizations may quickly come to mind. By selecting the right organizations, you can give with confidence, knowing that your dollars will be invested the way you want. Now that you’ve identified the causes you care about most, it’s time to find the organizations that best serve those causes. Start to build the charitable mission statement that will guide your philanthropic plan. Once you find your areas of interest, write them down. Was there a person or an experience that left a positive impact on your life? Pay attention to how God is speaking to you through these experiences, and how he is calling you to give back. Next, consider your personal experiences. Through prayerful consideration, your purpose and goals for charity will start to become clear. As Catholics, this guides everything we do. So, how can we discover the specific way God is calling us to be generous? Start with prayer. Each of us is generous by our very nature, and God calls each of us to express our generosity in a special way. Paul said, “Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
